After refusing to accept a minor league assignment, Wily Mo Pena was released tonight by the Washington Nationals, ending the outfielder's tenure with an organization that once viewed him as a centerpiece of its future. Pena had been placed on waivers this weekend, but went unclaimed. He is now a free agent. |

Wily Mo Peña was back in action today against the Houston Astros. In the first Spring Training game of 2009 for the Nationals, Wily Mo shook off the cobwebs and went 1 for 3 in the 1-0 loss. |

Wily Mo has begun physical therapy. Peña won't, however, play winter ball over the 2008/9 winter season. |

Wily Mo Peña had successful surgery performed in Cincinnati this morning by Dr. Tim Kremchek. The Nats are saying that Wily Mo will be out four to six months; he'll be ready for spring training 2009. According to the release, Kremchek repaired a "significant" tear of Peña's rotator cuff, as well as the tear and fraying of his posterior labrum. |
